Exhibit Two

The Nation of Islam

Identity, discipline, community, and controversy.

A Movement of Identity

The Nation of Islam became one of the most visible movements connected to Islam in America during the twentieth century. It attracted many Black Americans by speaking to issues of racism, self-discipline, independence, and dignity.

Although the Nation of Islam differed from mainstream Islamic beliefs in major ways, it still played a major role in introducing many people to Islamic language, identity, and community life.

This exhibit shows how religion, identity, and social struggle became connected in American history.

Community Structure

The movement emphasized discipline, organization, public speaking, and community responsibility.

Public Visibility

It made Islam more visible in American public life, especially in Black communities.

Religious Difference

The movement’s beliefs were not the same as traditional Sunni Islam, which became important later.
